Quick answer: December is a good month for Pahalgam if you want crisp winter days, quiet valleys and a real chance of snow, especially after mid-December. Expect nights around –4°C and days around 8°C. Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are open (road conditions permitting), while Baisaran and Chandanwari are not. Snow is never guaranteed in early December, so plan a trip that is still worth it without it.

What Pahalgam is like in December
December is the start of winter in the Lidder Valley. The summer crowds are gone, the pine forests turn dark against bare poplars, and the river runs low and clear. On sunny afternoons it can feel pleasant in a jacket. Once the sun drops behind the mountains, around 4 pm, the temperature falls fast.
It is a quieter, slower Pahalgam: fewer pony operators, fewer day-trippers, more space at the viewpoints, and fires and hot kahwa in the evenings. If you want lively streets and every attraction open, come in summer. If you want calm, cold and the possibility of snow, December suits you.
Pahalgam weather in December
Long-term averages for Pahalgam (IMD, 1991–2020) put December at about:
- Daytime: around 8°C, warmer in direct sun
- Night and early morning: around –4°C, often colder after clear nights
- Water: taps and puddles can freeze overnight; roads can be icy in shaded stretches in the morning
The second half of December is colder than the first. From 21 December, Kashmir enters Chillai Kalan, the traditional 40-day period of the hardest cold, which runs to the end of January.
Does it snow in Pahalgam in December?
It can, but it is not guaranteed. In most years:
- Early December (1–10): snow is possible but unreliable. You may see snow on the surrounding peaks rather than in town.
- Mid-December (11–20): better chances, especially at higher points like Aru and Betaab.
- Late December (21–31): the best December odds, and the most wintry feel. This is also the busiest and most expensive week because of Christmas and New Year.
If seeing snow is the main reason for your trip, late December or January is the safer bet. Higher spots hold snow longer than Pahalgam town, and snow already on the ground from earlier falls is common even when no fresh snow falls during your stay.
If there is no snow during your dates
You will still have frozen mornings, frost on the meadows, snow on the high ridges, empty valleys and good light for photography. Keep one flexible day in your plan: snow often arrives with a western disturbance, and forecasts give a few days' warning.
Which places are open in Pahalgam in December 2026?
This is the part most older guides get wrong. Since 2025, several spots around Pahalgam have been closed to tourists by the district administration. As of our last check:
- Betaab Valley — open. Reopened in June 2025. In December, access depends on the road being clear on the day.
- Aru Valley — open. Reopened in September 2025. The road is higher and narrower, so snow can block it temporarily. Ask at the taxi stand in the morning.
- Baisaran Valley — closed. Closed since April 2025, with no reopening date announced.
- Chandanwari — listed as closed. The Anantnag district closure notice of 7 July 2026 lists it until 31 December 2026; reports have been mixed, so check on the day.
- Tulian Lake and trekking routes — closed until further orders.
In 2026, visitors to Betaab and Aru have also been asked to leave by around 4 pm. Go in the morning, and confirm the current timing locally.
Things to do in Pahalgam in December
- Betaab Valley in the morning: the meadows, frozen edges of the stream and pine slopes are at their best before noon. If there is snow, this is the easiest place for snow play.
- Aru Valley drive: about 12 km beyond Pahalgam, higher and snowier. Go only if the road is open that morning.
- Walk along the Lidder River: the river is low and clear in winter, and the light in the valley is beautiful in the late afternoon.
- Pahalgam market: for pherans (the warm Kashmiri cloak), shawls, dry fruits and saffron. Many shops close earlier in winter.
- Eat winter food: try harissa (a slow-cooked mutton breakfast dish made only in the cold months), noon chai and kahwa, and a Kashmiri wazwan meal.
- Stops on the way from Srinagar: the Martand Sun Temple ruins near Mattan and the Avantipora temple ruins on the highway make good breaks on the drive.
- Photography: clear December days give sharp views of the snow ridges; sunrise and late afternoon are the best times.

How to reach Pahalgam in December
- By air: Srinagar airport is the nearest, about 95 km from Pahalgam. The drive goes via Pampore, Awantipora, Bijbehara and the Lidder Valley road and usually takes around 2.5–3 hours, longer after snow.
- By train: the Vande Bharat Express now runs from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar (about 4 hours 50 minutes, six days a week). From Srinagar station, continue by taxi.
- By road from Jammu: possible, but in winter the highway can close after snow or landslides. Build in a spare day.
Drive in daylight, avoid the last stretch after dark, and leave time for icy patches in the mornings. If you are staying with us, we can arrange airport or station pickup; message us on WhatsApp.
Where to stay in Pahalgam in December
You have three broad choices:
- Pahalgam town: walking distance to the market and taxi stand. Coldest at night, and the busiest and priciest around Christmas and New Year.
- The Lidder Valley road below Pahalgam: quieter riverside stays a short drive from town, easier to reach after snow, and a good base for both Pahalgam and the sights on the Srinagar road.
- Aru: the most snow and the most remote. Wonderful when the road is open, difficult when it is not.
Whichever you choose, ask before booking about room heating, hot water and power backup. These matter far more in December than the view.
Royal Cliff Resort is on the Lidder Valley road at Dalseer, Sallar, about 16 km before Pahalgam, with mountain and river views and Kashmiri food cooked in-house. Our rooms range from ₹2,000 to ₹5,500 a night. See the rooms or ask us on WhatsApp for December rates and availability.
What to pack for Pahalgam in December
- Thermal inner layers (top and bottom), a fleece or sweater, and a warm down or padded jacket
- Woollen cap, gloves, a scarf or neck warmer, and two pairs of woollen socks per day
- Waterproof shoes or boots with good grip; snow and ice make smooth soles slippery
- Sunglasses and sunscreen: winter sun at altitude is strong
- Moisturiser and lip balm for the dry cold
- A power bank: cold drains phone batteries quickly
You can also buy or hire a pheran locally; it is the warmest thing you can wear in Kashmir.
How many days do you need?
Two nights is the sweet spot in December: one full day for Betaab and Aru (if open), and a slower day for the river, market and food. A single day trip from Srinagar is possible, but with short winter daylight you spend most of it in the car.
Is December a good time for a honeymoon in Pahalgam?
Yes, if you like quiet. December gives you empty viewpoints, cosy evenings and a chance of snow, without the summer crowds. Book the Christmas–New Year week early, as it fills first.
